In this innovative design, Zhang JIn explores the connection between the individual and the collective, as well as the relationship between man and nature. Each small tray represents an individual, while the legs below are independent yet interconnected. This design emphasizes the need for independent space and respect, while also highlighting the importance of collective care and love. Just like the guiding stars in the sky, the Big Dipper coffee table brings people together, encouraging them to sit and share. It promotes a sense of independence without loneliness, fostering openness and a willingness to share.
The main material used in the Big Dipper coffee table is ash, and the legs are connected using the traditional mortise and tenon technique. To ensure stability and balance, screws and metal sheets are used to reinforce the connection between the table legs and the wooden structure. The dimensions of the table are 1750mm in width, 1050mm in depth, and 550mm in height.
The Big Dipper coffee table is not only visually striking but also highly functional. It is designed for gatherings and parties, with high and low tables that can accommodate different items. Each guest has their own independent space, creating a sense of unity as they gather around the table, reminiscent of the night sky. The design also solves the problem of accidentally using the wrong cup, as each guest has their own designated space. It promotes a sense of togetherness while respecting individual preferences.
The Big Dipper coffee table project began in September 2017 and was completed in November 2017 in Shanghai. It was exhibited at the Guangzhou Design Week in November 2017. The design was informed by research conducted through questionnaires with young consumers in major cities in China. The focus was on the function of gathering, addressing issues such as the awkwardness of using the wrong cup, the need for more engaging designs, and the desire for both independence and connection.
The design process presented several challenges, particularly in maintaining the stability and balance of the multiple legs. To overcome this, the ancient Chinese mortise and tenon technology was employed, creating a strong and secure structure. The process was intricate, as the opening in the middle of the legs posed a risk of breakage. However, the design team successfully overcame this difficulty. Invisible screws and metal iron sheets were also used to ensure a neat and aesthetically pleasing overall design.
As the name suggests, the Big Dipper coffee table draws inspiration from the constellation in the night sky. The seven tables provide users with independent spaces while forming a cohesive whole through the cross of the legs. This design encourages free-flowing conversations, discussions, and coffee-sharing experiences. Whether in a home or business space, the Big Dipper coffee table is an excellent choice for gatherings and sharing moments.
The Big Dipper coffee table design has been recognized for its creativity and ingenuity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2018. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit outstanding technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
